ADHD Treatment Options
There are several options for helping children with ADHD. These include Behavioral Intervention, Medication, Individual Counseling, and Family Counseling. Most likely all things thrive better in an optimum environment. Maximizing family communication and reducing family conflict helps reduce stress on all individuals in the family. Children adjusting to the disability of ADHD can benefit greatly from the reduced stress which accompanies improved family communication. These children are dealing with enough stress just coping with the challenges of ADHD. Behavior intervention may also focus on improving the home environment in such a way that family members encourage positive behaviors and productively discourage unwanted or mal-adaptive behaviors.
In addition to developing a behavior modification plan parents may be encouraged to develop improved parental-teamwork and alter their own behaviors which may have a negative impact or their child or children. They will be guided to establish clear expectations for their children and provide effective rewards when children are compliant. They may also be encouraged to provide structure and hold children accountable when they are non-compliant. Individual counseling can help children to express themselves so they can release tension and improve their ability to solve problems more effectively. The use of stimulant medication such as ritalin, dexedrine, focalin, and ritalin are frequently helpful.. Non-stimulants such as intuniv and strattera may also be helpful
