Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a revolutionary form of treatment that is research based, and has been proven to be effective addressing a variety of symptoms including anxiety, depression, stress, obsessive compulsive disorder, as well as pain management and substance abuse issues. This treatment modality can be extremely useful with individuals diagnosed with ADHD in that it is action oriented and can improve focus and goal achievement. It is an outgrowth of behavior therapy and is considered the "Third Wave", of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Although it has evolved from CBT there is a focus on acceptance of both thoughts and emotions, however, the goal in ACT is not to "get rid", of negative thoughts, but to lessen their impact, by learning to detach from them and look at troublesome thoughts from a different perspective. There are several core skills involved in this treatment modality, and I will discuss them in my posts or blogs over the next week. As with CBT there is a mindful component to the treatment. In my opinion the skills and tools used in ACT are relatively easy to use once they are understood by clients. From my perspective this is a very exciting new treatment modality that I have already found useful with my clients, as well as in my own life. I suspect ACT will become the most effective treatment modality that we have ever seen to this point in time, and likely in the years to come. I am sure it will be helpful to millions of people to overcome a variety of issues and concerns, including, anxiety, depression and stress.
