Most of us want to feel happy as much as possible. Certainly nothing wrong with wanting to feel happy more than we want to feel angry, hurt, or sad or fearful. However, sometimes we want to feel happy too much! By this I mean that we grasp for happiness and create an expectation that we should feel happy in every, or most situations. It is as if we try to force ourselves to be something that we are not. When we are trying to demand that we feel a certain way we are setting ourselves up to be unhappy and discontented. We might make a distinction between happiness and contentment. Why do people often get depressed around Christmas time? Part of the reason is that they create an expectation that they should feel happy when they don't. What if we were just to accept that we are unhappy in this current moment and be content with that experience, knowing that we will feel happy around the corner, reminding ourselves that all emotions are temporary. We often forget what it was like when we were children. Most likely we were not trying to force ourselves to be a certain way, we were just experiencing life without all the crazy expectations. That is exactly why we typically felt happy much of the time. We allowed ourselves to experience a full range of emotions without calling them negative or positive. We saw a bird that died and we felt sad. We didn't say to ourselves when we were eight years old, "that is a bad feeling, I shouldn't feel that", Unfortunately as adults we feel pressure to be "up", and have ourselves, "together", Frequently we do not feel comfortable telling others how we feel because it may be perceived that there is something wrong with us. In our world it is as if we are not allowed to feel down or have the blues. Being ourselves is often not well accepted unless we have authentic friendships, and are around people who are authentic, relaxed in their being, and can be emotionally open and vulnerable.
