I learned today that one of my friends passed away. We have known each other for about 20 years and the news was a complete shock to me. I managed to get through my work day with some degree of productivity and again struggled with my own emotions. I was reminded to appreciate my own life despite the sadness I feel regarding my loss. We often hear people say things like "be positive" or "look on the bright side". Traditionally psychotherapy has encouraged us to express our loss and experiences related to anger and frustration. The ability to experience both loss and appreciation may seem foreign and contradictory to us. Can we allow ourselves to be authentic and experience the frequent conflicting feelings which exist within us? I believe that it is possible to be sad, angry, and disappointed that we lost our job and yet still appreciate that we having a loving spouse and are able to walk, stand, and do other ordinary things that we may typically take for granted. For myself I want to allow the truth of my own emotions and continue to practice appreciation for the gifts that life offers me. I suspect that the daily practice of mindfulness and appreciation protect us when we are challenged with difficult situations.
