Counting Your Blessings
I am reminded of the first time I saw a woman washing dishes with her feet because she had no arms. I was stunned by the woman's desire and ability to be independent despite her disability. I remember for a while after that experience reminding myself to appreciate my own good fortune and personal wealth. You know the wealth of common things, like being able to walk, wash dishes, and the ability to vacuum the living room floor. After that experience I made an effort to be more appreciative than I had in the past. I suspect, however, that even ordinary people like ourselves can become an inspiration for those around when we positively approach any situation or life challenge. I was always intrigued by the word "extra ordinary".
Many of us work hard in life and expend incredible energy focusing on our goals. Certainly hard work, a desire to achieve a goal, proper coaching, and correct practice play a major role when we are successful in any area of life. We all need continued motivation and maybe support from others, however, there must be something else in addition to these things that enable certain individuals to accomplished things that appear super-human. You know those things that are just amazingly extraordinary.
One such skill may be related to our ability to visualize a positive outcome. Many people believe that if we can create a positive visualization in our mind we will naturally move toward achieving the image that we created. Another such skill or quality may be that of relaxing and developing an attitude of self-acceptance. Learning to appreciate our life as it is can be challenging for many of us. I personally need to remind myself to appreciate my current life circumstances and the everyday things that go unnoticed. Unfortunately many things no longer seem special because they are part of my everyday life. Like Leonardo DiCaprio in the scene from Titanic my new mantra is, "I have everything that I need"..
