I was thinking about yesterday's post related to self-criticism. Learning to be less self critical and more forgiving are very much related. What a wonderful thing to be able to be forgiving. of ourselves or others. Many of us are angry with our parents. for what happened to us as a child. Or continue to be resentful of a spouse that we divorced 15 years ago. Sometimes we continue to rev up our systems about things that occurred 30 or 40 years ago. Wow! That is really amazing! We can carry this anger with us for so many years and not really realize it. How much wear and tear is this on our bodies? Just because I am a therapist doesn't mean that I am exempt from pressing the cortosol button from time to time and stressing myself out over something that happened as a child. That's right! I am a therapist so I am supposed to be above all that. These days my efforts related to clearing negativity from my system as quickly as possible. Denying my experience or the truth of the emotion certainly won't help. The Dali Lama says that we want to forgive others to free ourselves. What insight!
