Unfortunately many parents come to believe that their child's challenges related to ADHD are the result of their parenting or parenting mistakes. ADHD is a behavioral disorder that is the result of neurological issues which typically are the result of genetic factors. It is true, however, that improved parenting can greatly help children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. It is also true that poor parenting, and family conflict can create additional and unnecessary stress on your child which makes it more difficult for them to cope with their disability. As children observe their parents and learn to communicate and resolve conflict effectively at home, they will ultimately use these skills as they relate to others both at school and in other social situations. Effective parents not only model behaviors which are constant with helping their children learn effective social skills but they are also able to provide children with the gentle and caring structure which is necessary for their growth and development. It is this gentle structure which will help children overcome the impulsivity which is most injurious to their social interaction and development. This structure also helps children develop improved organizational skills and work habits so that they can ultimately overcome challenges presented by inattention and other executive function challenges which are a part of this disabilty.
