As I was having breakfast this morning, and Tina Turner's song, "What's Love Got To Do With It", was playing, in my head. I always liked listening to the song but never really payed close attention to the words.. I decided to download the lyrics from online. So what is this garbage we call love anyway? Ok, That is a little cynical! But what is love really? The Greeks identified three primary types of love, Eros, Agapa, and Philos. As I understand it Eros might be simply defined as the romantic attraction that occurs when Cupid strikes our heart with his arrow. This is likely to be more lustful and physical in nature. Agapa might be defined as the Devine Spirit or God's caring for man and man's adoration of God. Much like a mother's love which is unconditional. It is not effected by a persons behavior, success or other external circumstances. Philos would be defined as brotherly love. This might be the love that is expressed between, friends and family members. It is not unconditional. It may be much like the sense of compassion we feel for others but also may disappear when we are hurt or believe we have not been treated well by the other. I have no idea if the Greeks were correct in their description? Hopefully we can have heart felt love and compassion for others. So difficult when we are hurt and angry. In my mind this may be the same as love of God, but I don't really know?. I do know that I want my heart to be open and experience as much compassion as possible. It is interesting that the opposite of the word for philos is phobia. That is worth thinking about? Since I myself have some phobia related issues it might be something for me to think about. Yes, The therapist is not perfect and I doesn't want to wast one minute of his precious time pretending to be something different from what he is truly. The personal mask we hide behind so others don't know us can become too heavy and drains our energy. I only want to wear it when it is absolutely necessary. The mask we need to protect others and show respect is so much lighter. Sometimes we share a simile when we want others to feel comfortable, that is not what I am talking about. What are your thoughts? I personally love the line from Randy Travis's song "Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles with frozen smiles to chase love away. Thank you Randy Travis and Tina Turner. Again please comment and share if you find this helpful.
